On 6 November 2007, police arrested three suspects: Patrick Diya Lumumba, owner of a local bar; Amanda Knox, a student from Spencer, Indiana, USA; and Raffaele Sollecito, an Italian student. Lumumba was later released and exonerated.

Meredith Susanna Cara Kercher, known to her friends as "Mez", was born in February 1986 in Southwark, London, England, and lived in Coulsdon, South London. She attended the University of Leeds, and as part of the ERASMUS student exchange programme, had gone to Perugia, Italy to complete her degree course. Kercher was murdered on the evening of 1 November 2007.

Amanda Knox, aged 20 at the time of Kercher's killing, is a University of Washington student from Seattle, Washington, USA. She was studying in Perugia at the University for Foreigners. Knox was arrested on the morning of 6 November 2007 after she allegedly implicated herself in the crime during police questioning on 5-6 November. Knox allegedly told the police that she had been in the house when the murder took place and had "heard the screams." On 4 December 2009, Knox was found guilty of all six charges, which include civil as well as criminal charges, and sentenced to 26 years in jail.

Raffaele Sollecito, from Giovinazzo, Bari, was 23 years old and nearing the completion of a degree at the University of Perugia at the time of the murder. He had known Knox for only a few days when Kercher was murdered. Sollecito was found guilty of all five charges attributed to him and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Rudy Hermann Guede, 20, originally from the Ivory Coast, was arrested on November 20 (2007) for suspected involvement in the Kercher killing. On 28 October 2008 he was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to 30 years. DNA tests indicate that Guede had sex with Kercher before her murder and that feces found in the toilet were his.

Guede elected for a "fast track" trial on 16 October 2008. The trial of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito began on 16 January 2009

On Dec 4, 2009, after an 11-month trial in the Italian university town of Perugia, Knox, 22, was convicted for the murder and sexual assault of British student Meredith Kercher. Knox's Italian ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 25, received a 25-year sentence for his part in the November 2007 killing.

The prosecution alleged that the three youths (Sollecito, Knox and Guede) were high on drugs when they tried to engage Kercher, 21, in a sex game that turned violent, leaving her dead with stab wounds to the neck.
